IN MEMORY

OF JAMES UKO

The NSL announces the loss of James Uko, 19, who died suddenly on June 9. That was a day before he was to enter the NSL draft. Uko was one of the best footballers in the area and had just attended trials at Los Angeles Galaxy. Uko arrived the country barely three months before from Kumba, Cameroon. Uko is with FIFA's President Sepp Blatter in the picture above.

Onadrix Rangers captures sixth Nzenwa Cup; defeat Eastern United, 3-1

(By Obioha "Robinson" Obi, Colmar Manor, MD)               Onadrix Rangers finished off a memorable year and one for the ages as they came from behind to defeat Eastern United, 3-1, in a thrilling NSL Nzenwa Cup championship game. This was the third time they beat Eastern this season. With the win, they capped off the NSL's only triple crown, collecting their sixth Nzenwa Cup to go along with their Oyeneyin Super Cup and Nwafor FA Challenge Cup victories, this season.

The match started off with a bang as Eastern United's three-prong attack of Uzo Anukam, Galidore Ngapeth and Richard Hutchinson, anchored by Romeo Ngoti, took the action to the Rangers defense after strongman Edwin Ebai suffered a groin injury in the games opening minute, forcing him to miss the rest of the game. Rangers' strategy in the back was seemless as Ike Akamike stepped into the sweeper role, however, their midfield suffered from his absence and Eastern took control of the game. Newly crowned NSL scoring record holder, Uzo Anukam (12 goals, 1 goal playoffs) found himself free at the top of the Rangers' penalty box and calmly lifted the ball over the onrushing goalkeeper, skipper Emeka Igwe, in the 20th minute to open up the scoring, 1-0, to the delight of the over flowing crowd at Colmar Manor Ballfields.

Down a goal, Rangers' awoke from their slumber and reorganized their attack inserting Mohammed Sessay into the midfield and they started to put pressure on Eastern's defense. In the 36th minute, Rangers' found the equalizer in one of the most spectacular goals in NSL championship history when King Smith took a seemingly harmless ball just outside his penalty box following a corner kick and started a one man counter attack down the left wing, beating two defenders, and fending off a third at the other end before unleashing a ferocious shot that violently rattled United's net. It was a stunning goal that had the crowd still buzzing as both teams entered the half tied, 1-1.

Despite a heavy downpour, the Colmar faithful braved the weather and were treated to a wonderful display of end to end soccer action as both teams went in search of the go ahead goal, in the second half. Rangers' had the first chance in the 54th minute when Mohammed Tarawalli missed a sitter, blasting the ball over the bar. Leroy Oligie found himself in a similar situation a minute later but Easterns' Ibekwe Anya saved his team from going down. That is when Eastern had seen enough and Galidore Ngapeth took matters into his own hands during the next five minute stretch forcing two spectacular saves from Igwe during that span. Tarawalli was at it again in the 73rd minute but watched Anya foil his attempt as the pace continued to increase. In addition, Chris Nwaeze was brilliant in the middle of Easterns' defense on a couple of breathtaking defensive moments to keep his squad in the game.

Unfortunately, as the game was winding down, Eastern United's defense was doomed by an unspeakable defensive error by the usually reliable Segun Owolabi when he literally gave the ball to Rangers' mecurial playmaker, Leroy Oligie, who dummied two defenders and methodically blasted a grounder past the defenseless Anya, giving Rangers' a precious 2-1 lead in the 76th minute, leaving a dispondent Eastern United team down a goal. Rangers' added an insurance goal in the 84th minute when second half substitute, Samuel Osagie, dispossessed Nwaeze and deftly wrong-footed Anya, from eight yards out, for an insurmountable 3-1 lead and the hard earned victory.

Rangers' completed a remarkable feat in collecting all three available trophies this season, adding their sixth Nzenwa Cup in seven seasons and remain undefeated in championship games. The Rangers' legend is indisputable and calling them a dynasty is now a complete understatement as they have obliterated all competition, year after year. Notwithstanding, Rangers' have successfully defended their NSL crown for three straight years for the second time, a feat that may never again be duplicated. The only thing left for Rangers' is to see if they can make it four in a row.

The remaining eight teams will go back to the drawing board and revamp their strategy after watching Rangers' lead the tables from start to finish, for the second year in a row and the team is looking like they are prime to stay that way for awhile.

MORE TRADE ANNOUNCEMENTS!!!

The record trend of trades has continued as Enyimba FC completed another blockbuster, this time acquiring striker Benji Marciano from Youngblood FC in exchange for its 2009 2nd round picks in both the General and Supplemental Drafts. Enyimba and Youngblood have been the busiest teams in trade transactions this season. Earlier, Enyimba and Inter Nationale FC finalized a deal that swapped goalkeepers sending Inter's talented Kevin Wong to Enyimba for Taiye Akinmboni. Inter immediately turned around and traded Taiye to Raccah Rovers for defender Ambrose Akenji. In addition, Inter also received Enyimba's 2008 2nd round Supplemental Pick. Raccah Rovers traded their 2nd round pick in the Supplemental Draft to Youngblood for MF Sidi Diarra. Youngblood also traded their top pick, sweeper Emmanuel Ebong to Inter Nationale FC in exchange for Inter's first and second round picks in the 2008 Supplementary Draft. Prior to the beginning of the 2008 season, Young Blood began the moves by acquiring former player defender Obi Ezeogu from Enyimba as part of considerations from a 2007 trade involving F Nze Zesco King..... Eastern United pulled off two key trades. It acquired MF Galidore Ngapeth from Inter Nationale in return for first, second, and third round supplementary picks plus MF Best Jesurobo.... Eastern also moved to trade its second round pick of 2008 MF Alfred Favez to MSSC for MSSC's first pick in the 2008 Supplementary Round....Inter Nationale acquired Richard "Zico" Opanuga from Raccah Rovers in exchange for its 2008 Supplementary first round pick.....Inter Nationale FC has traded defender James Hall to Ogbunigwe in exchange for Ogbunigwe's first round pick in the 2008 Supplementary Draft which is the No. 8 pick overall. Hall, a top defender, was drafted No. 3 in the 2007 Supplementary Draft by Inter but had hoped to be with Ogbunigwe.

Charles "Rude Boy" Oriaku ....

Charles "Rude Boy" Oriaku, one of NSL's colorful players, got his wish as MoFe Stars trade him to Ogbunigwe for a 2008 Third Round pick. Femi Alabi, MSSC Owner said "Rudeboy asked for a trade and I made sure that his wish came through. I wish him the best." Ogbunigwe had given signs of going after Charles Oriaku to help shore up its defense. A week before this trade, Oriaku who was at the time traded from Young Bloods to MSSC, exploded: "I am going to wait it out this year and become a free agent the next (year) so I can play for a team of my choice. Whoever made the deal for me ...bad deal.... obviously (Young Bloods) he got some tricks up his sleeves."

Young Bloods FC had moved him to MoFe Stars SC in exchange for MoFe's third round pick in the 2008 draft. Charles, was one of NSL's top central defenders when he was selected years ago by Raccah Rovers in the first round. However, his temperament has meant that he was always on the move to new destinations. He vowed not to play for the Bloods after a team suspension. MoFe is getting a talented defender who, on his best day, can put any forward under lock and key.

Nov 26, 2007 -- Eastern United has acquired Best Jesuorobo and Chuck Okeke from Enyimba FC in an offseason trade in exchange for Tochi Duhu who now will suit up for Enyimba FC.
